According to the 2017 top earning list of Australian athletes, former world number one golfer Jason Day would be the closest to cracking the list, having earned AU$18.9m a year ago.

Salaries and prize money are up significantly, but endorsement earnings fell for the second straight year to $ 877 million as companies watch their sports marketing budgets.

No women have made it onto the list, with Serena Williams dropping out of the elite earners after taking time off due to pregnancy.

Conor McGregor also benefitted from the historic fight last August, as the Irish MMA athlete jumped to fourth spot with a reported $99 million earnings of which $85 million came in winnings/salary.

NBA star LeBron James is the highest-paid basketball player to feature on the list, coming in at sixth rank with total earnings of $112 million, just ahead of Roger Federer, who earned $102 million. There are no hockey players on the list. However, Kohli's earnings are less than one-fourth of Mayweather, who earned $285 million in the same period.

There were four Boston-based athletes on the list, led by Irving at $36.1 million.

Between them, the top 100 earned a collective $3.8bn during the past 12 months, which represents an increase of 23% from 2017.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is the highest earning National Football League player, coming in at ninth with $88 million. However, that was about $5 million less than National Basketball Association player Nicolas Batum, who landed the 100th spot on the list.
