Weinstein's lawyer wrote in a court filing on May 3 that federal prosecutors in NY also have a criminal investigation into his client's behavior. "This is the first time since written history that women are being believed - begrudgingly, but still".

The outpouring saw people around the world come forward with cases of sexual mistreatment, leading to resignations and sackings of powerful men across industries, and the disgrace of Oscar victor Kevin Spacey.

The officials spoke Thursday to the AP on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the investigation.

Dozens of other big names in the entertainment industry have since been accused of sexual misconduct, including Louis CK, R. Kelly and most recently, Morgan Freeman. The New York Post/Page Six reported that the charges will likely be related to her allegations.

"That was the culture then", said Weinstein.
