Details of those making the accusations have not yet been officially released, but former actress Lucia Evans, who said Mr Weinstein forced her into oral sex in 2004, is thought to be one of the women whose cases triggered the charges.

Sources said Weinstein would be charged with first and third-degree rape related to one case and criminal sex act related to another.

A judge agreed to release Weinstein on $1 million bail, with constant electronic monitoring and a ban on travelling beyond NY and CT.

It was a scene not unlike the red carpet walks he used to do, further highlighting how far he has fallen since dozens of women came forward in the New York Times and the New Yorker to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was formally arrested Friday morning on suspicion of rape, a criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct.

His bail was set at $1 million cash (or $10 million bond; a check for $1 million is apparently being deposited this morning), with a 24/7 monitoring device paid for by him.

The rape charges allege that on March 18, 2013, at 569 Lexington Ave., now a hotel, Weinstein kept a woman "against her will" in a room and "engaged in sexual intercourse.by forcible compulsion" and "at the time of the incident informant had clearly expressed her lack of consent to the act".

About 90 minutes later, Weinstein was led by officers into court in handcuffs, grimacing with his head bowed, his books nowhere in sight, to await arraignment.

"We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you", actor Rose McGowan tweeted on Friday, as Weinstein sat in court.

Weinstein has been accused of rape, assault and other forms of sexual misconduct.

The accusations, first reported by The New York Times and The New Yorker a year ago, gave rise to the #MeToo movement in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men in business, government, and entertainment of misconduct.

In its statement, the New York Police Department thanked "these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. described the case as an "active, ongoing investigation".

He has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

The Reuters news agency said the rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Weinstein lawyer Brafman signaled that he intends to attempt to undermine the credibility of Weinstein's accusers. "May this give hope to all victims and survivors everywhere that are telling their truths", she said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "The arrest and ensuing charges are the results of a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office", the NYPD said. "What took you so long Harvey?" she said. NYPD spokesman Eugene White said he'll be in the 1st Precinct, where he will be processed, for about an hour, before being taken to Manhattan Supreme Court to face a judge. Evans alleged that in 2004, Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him after luring her into an encounter under false pretenses. "This is the first time since written history that women are being believed - begrudgingly, but still". I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him.

Until the scandal, Weinstein was among the most influential forces in American film. The bankruptcy sale was approved after the movie company was hobbled by sexual harassment claims against its co-founder.
