Govt Congratulates Chef Nina Compton on James Beard Award

Restaurant owner Frank Stitt was on hand to accept the award for his popular restaurant that combines classic French cuisine, Southern cooking and farm fresh ingredients. The James Beard Awards named the Minneapolis native "Top Chef of the Midwest" at their glitzy ceremony in Chicago Monday night.

Hamilton also is a previous nominee, earning a nomination in the same top category a year ago. Highlands has been a finalist for the award for nine years in a row.

The Oscars of the food world handed out its awards Monday night, and a chef who got her start in Miami took home a coveted medal. The Hemingway restaurant is managed by Scott's mother, Rosie, and has been in business for over 30 years, garnering notice from national publications including The New York Times. Her current menu offers diners such dishes as a smoked bluefish salad with pickled celery and rye crackers, and chicken wings and Manila clams braised in sherry with leeks. "Patisserie" in San Francisco were honored as the Best Bakers in the country. The James Beard Awards are considered one of the highest forms of recognition in the food industry.

Camille Cogswell, pastry chef at Zahav in Old City, was nominated for rising star chef.

Three other Minneapolis chefs were also nominated, but did not walk away with any hardware.
