After more than three decades, authorities have arrested a man suspected of terrorizing communities throughout California from 1976 to 1986 who became known first as the "East Area Rapist" and later as the 'Golden State Killer, ' according to the Sacramento Bee.
Another neighbor, Natalia Bedes-Correnti, said DeAngelo appeared to be a "nice old grandpa" but he cursed loudly and often over misplaced vehicle keys and the like.
Jennifer Carole, now living in Santa Cruz, holds a picture of her parents who authorities say were slain by the Golden State Killer. "I think this is the definition of 'bittersweet'".
According to police, DeAngelo is responsible for as many as 12 murders and upwards of 50 rapes during a reign of terror that gripped California in the 70s and 80s.

Natalia Bedes-Correnti said Wednesday that Joseph James DeAngelo never yelled at people but would be on "his driveway yelling and screaming, looking for his keys".
"Now it feels like this thing that she wanted so badly is done", he said. He did not explain what they meant by "discarded DNA" but said DeAngelo had been under surveillance for six days and that they caught him by surprise when they moved in to arrest him.
Little did everyone know, at the time, was that the ex-police officer was allegedly hiding a dark secret.
As the string of crimes were making headlines, Mr DeAngelo was working as a police officer. That serial criminal was tied to burglaries and one killing.
Margaret says her attack happened in her bedroom at 2 a.m., 41 years ago, and the perpetrator used the same M.O.as other East Area Rapist and Golden State Killer attacks.
That serial killer is tied to at least 12 homicides, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries across California.
Gorman said DeAngelo left a threatening message on his family's voicemail around 1994, saying he was "going to deliver a load of death" if the Gormans didn't curb their Rottweiler's barking. The victims were identified as a couple with the last name Harrington by Keith's brother, Bruce Harrington, who spoke at a press conference Wednesday.

When DeAngelo was arrested, Sheriff Jones said officers simply waited for him to walk outside his house. The 72-year-old Citrus Heights resident was booked on a Ventura County warrant linked to the 1980 murders of Charlene and Lyman Smith at a home on High Point Drive in Ventura.
McNamara spent almost 10 years investigating and writing about the killer, also known as the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker, on her blog TrueCrimeDiary.com and for the manuscript to the book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark".
Sacramento County district attorney Anne Marie Schubert said DeAngelo had been charged with two counts of murder with further charges to come.
Totten says prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the former police officer.
Authorities believe he raped 37 people in the Sacramento area and Central Valley and killed two between 1976 and 1978.
Wardlow also said she never let the attack define her.
"This case is a great example as to how fortunate we are to have DNA technology advancements, which can help solve crimes even as long as 40 years later".
"The answer has always been in Sacramento", Schubert said.
Between 1976 and 1986, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, the attacker killed a dozen people and raped 45 people, attacking people who were as young as 13 and as old as 41. The attacks expanded to the Bay Area in late 1978.
According to cops, DeAngelo spent eight years brutalizing women - and sometimes men -- from different cities across California.
