Liquidators Make Bids for Bon-Ton

WQAD has left voicemail and email messages with Bon-Ton's corporate spokesperson inquiring about the future of the Davenport and Moline stores.

On Monday Bon-Ton Stores Inc. only received bids from liquidators during its bankruptcy auction according to Reuters, signaling the possibility of closure for the retail giant.

Bon-Ton had been working with property owners Washington Prime Group and Namdar Realty Group to buy the company out of bankruptcy and continue operating some of the stores. Monday, a court supervised auction only drew bids from two liquidators.

On Friday, Bon-Ton filed notice that it had selected the Hilco/Gordon Brothers bid as the baseline bid for the bankruptcy auction.

Late last week, it notified officials across its 23-state footprint of potential store and fulfillment center closures, including locations in Lancaster, York, Bethlehem and Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

Other stores operated by Bon-Ton are under the Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Carson's, Elder- Beerman and Herberger's names, but most of its stores have histories that predate the parent company.

Bon-Ton has not yet responded to the reports.

Another anchor store at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City may be vanishing soon.

Online shopping, which has affected all brick-and-mortar retailers by reducing mall traffic, hit Bon-Ton particularly hard.

The company has headquarters in York, Pennsylvania, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Great American also is part of the Toys R Us liquidation.

More than $1 million was spent on fixtures for Younkers' Southbridge Mall store, which employed 70 people in 59 departments when it opened.
