Trump's DACA decision elevates the debate over illegal immigration, NAFTA

Trump also doubled down on his criticism of the Mexican government, saying it has "the absolute power" to stop the "caravans" of hundreds of Central Americans, who, he said, are traveling across the neighboring country on their way to the U.S.

President Donald Trump declared as "dead" on Monday a program that protects immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children and pressed Congress to "immediately" pass legislation to secure the US border with Mexico.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama started the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012.

Trump suggested in another tweet that Republicans override Democratic opposition in Congress and push through tougher immigration laws, declaring, "NO MORE DACA DEAL". "Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don't allow them to do their job", he added. But the caravan has nothing to do with DACA - the roughly 1,200 people marching mostly from Honduras are seeking political asylum. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW.

It was not immediately clear what Trump was referring to when he said people are coming to take advantage of the program.

"They want in on the act!" he wrote.

That's a bold assertion - one that is likely completely untrue. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a GOP primary opponent of Trump in 2016 and possibly again in 2020, tweeted in response: "A true leader preserves & offers hope, doesn't take hope from innocent children who call America home".

The Fox headline was "Caravan of illegal immigrants headed to U.S". But much of that money can only be used to fix existing segments, not build new sections. They were simply unwilling to give Trump the other concessions he wanted on border security, and so, the DACA recipients were abandoned. A reporter from BuzzFeed has been with them. "All of that, and then you don't get to the United States". Congress needs to pass a DACA solution as a stand-alone, bipartisan bill, with a veto proof majority and put finality to this situation that President Trump caused himself.

Migrants in Israel to resettle in Canada, Germany, Italy: Netanyahu
He called it a "total surrender to the false campaign in the media" and said the credibility of the government was at stake. Most arrived in Israel in the second half of the last decade, crossing from Egypt before the route was sealed.

It refers to the practice of releasing immigrants apprehended at or near the border, expecting them to appear at a later date before a USA immigration judge. Such cases are rarely successful, but they often take time to migrate through the legal system, sometimes taking years.

A group called Pueblo Sin Frontera, or People Without Borders, organized the mass movement through Mexico as a way of helping Central American migrants avoid criminal gangs and harassment by authorities as they trek to the U.S. border.

From the day Donald Trump kicked off his campaign for president back in the summer of 2015 he made sure to highlight immigration, quickly making headlines by labeling illegal immigrants from Mexico as "rapists" and "murderers".

"The only person gaming DACA is not in the caravan". I've spoken with dozens of people who cite violence, instability, and poverty as reasons for leaving. In February, Democrats overwhelmingly voted to fund Trump's border wall in exchange for providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers.

Trump lashed out at Mexico in his second of the three tweets Sunday. Videgaray pointed out that Mexico and the United States already work closely on migration issues.

It's unclear, however, whether there is any appetite in Congress for such changes, especially now that the president has said he is no longer interested in protecting young "Dreamer" immigrants from deportation. An inaccurate news report should not serve to question this strong cooperation.

"For 27 years, I was privileged to work with the thousands of career DOJ lawyers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who work hard every day to keep our country safe, our rights protected, and the rule of law intact".
