IN hired Crean in 2008, but he never advanced past the Sweet 16 in nine years with the proud basketball school.

Georgia appears to be the only SEC job opening remaining, as Ole Miss expected to hire Middle Tennessee head coach Kermit Davis as early as Thursday.

During his career as a head coach, Crean has a record of 356-231 which includes a Final Four appearance with Marquette and three Sweet 16 appearances at Indiana. "I'm extremely excited to have him leading Georgia Basketball into the future and to welcome his family into the Bulldog Nation".

Georgia will officially introduce Crean as its new head coach on Friday at a 3 p.m. news conference. The university fired Mark Fox, who was at the helm for nine seasons, last Saturday.

Di Francesco, for his part, said "Rome deserved 10 out of 10 for application, I saw a mature team, that played a careful game".

Tom Crean has still stayed in Bloomington after he was sacked by in on March 16, 2017.

"I am honored an humbled to join the University of Georgia family", Crean said in the statement. Other coaches will have to wait seeing that they're in the NCAA tournament. The Dawgs were reportedly close to hiring former Ohio State coach Thad Matta this week before talks broke off. He began his career at IN with the program on NCAA probation, which was a result of more than 100 impermissible phone calls made to recruits by predecessor Kelvin Sampson and his assistants.

The desire to coach didn't leave Crean while he was working as an ESPN analyst either.

The school announced the hire of the former IN and Marquette coach on Thursday night. Marquette obtained AP top-25 rankings during six of Crean's last seven seasons in Milwaukee, including final rankings of No. 9 in 2003, No. 12 in 2002, No. 20 in 2007 and No. 25 in 2008.
