The newspaper said the offer to return the money was made in a letter from Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, to Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

Actress Stephanie Clifford has said the affair with Trump began in 2006 and lasted several months.

Daniels has said she had sex on one occasion with President Donald Trump, and then carried on a friendship with him.

Cohen, Trump's lawyer, was given until noon today to respond.

The POTUS was addressing the crowd at a Pennsylvania political rally on the weekend, when he spoke out Melania's role as his wife - and her duties in the White House.

He added that Daniels told Trump she didn't want to move to NY because she was planning on going to Florida. But Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, posted a picture of Daniels with Cooper and himself on his Twitter feed. The statement is an admission that the nondisclosure agreement exists and that it directly involves Trump.

Although Clifford has been making public appearances around the country, she's remained silent about the alleged 2006 affair with the president after receiving the hush money from Cohen just before the 2016 USA presidential election. Although a judge might rule that Daniels must stay quiet until the lawsuit reaches a conclusion, an injunction would not undo the interview she gave last week or compel CBS to pretend it didn't happen.

Clifford has argued forcefully in recent weeks that she has the right to tell her story because Trump didn't sign the document, and she's launched a publicity tour reportedly to include a "60 Minutes" appearance.

The letter also asked that the president's lawyers agree that neither Trump nor the shell company Cohen used to pay Clifford would attempt to block the broadcast of an interview Clifford taped with CBS News' 60 Minutes program last week.

Daniels is also now hoping that returning the money could allow her to end her silence.
