Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system developed and released by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems.

Microsoft's therefore decided that "Starting with the next update to Windows 10, coming soon, customers can choose to buy a new Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro PC with S mode enabled, and commercial customers will be able to deploy Windows 10 Enterprise with S mode enabled".

Anyone who has tried to disable automatic updates in Windows 10 knows how much of a pain it is. Microsoft had positioned Windows 10 S, released just last May, as its "lightweight" operating system alternative to Google's Chrome OS. In the post, Belfiore says Redmond received customer feedback that the "Windows 10 S" name was confusing to customers and partners.

This news comes straight from Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore, who tweeted it out last last night, stating, "Next year 10S will be a "mode" of existing versions, not a distinct version".

There are new Font settings in the Settings app, replacing the Control Panel functionality, and you can now download new fonts from the Microsoft Store. This list will contain the name of the previous Windows 10 version.

In a reply to Hachman, Microsoft's Belfiore wrote on Twitter, "We use Win10 S as an option for schools or businesses that want the "low-hassle"/guaranteed performance version". Windows 10 S users in an educational setting can now upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free, but "a fee may apply" to everyone else. Windows 10 version 1607 and version 1703 are not yet at "end of service".
