Barcelona and Lionel Messi had a record-breaking day with a 6-1 win over neighbors Girona on Saturday.

"When you think you have seen everything he goes and surprises you with a goal like that from the free kick", Valverde said about Messi.

There were shocking scenes at the Camp Nou when visiting striker Portu gave Girona a shock lead in the third minute - his 10th league goal of the campaign.

He mesmerized by scoring a Ronaldinho-esque free kick that slid under the jumping Girona wall and past the right hand of the goalkeeper. Benzema had snapped a run of almost three months without a league goal by scoring against Real Betis last weekend and was one of Real's best performers in their fifth consecutive win in all competitions.

Girona leave top scorer Cristhian Stuani on the bench as Pablo Machin makes three changes from the 3-0 win over Leganes.

"It's been an important week", coach Ernesto Valverde said.

"We were waiting to see how he was going to beat the wall and then he goes underneath it. He makes the hard look easy".

The game marked the 130th time that Messi has scored at home in La Liga - of those, Barcelona have lost only twice.

Fortunately for Barcelona, Luis Suarez equalized within minutes and the game was level again. Messi cut the Girona defence in half with a good ball to Coutinho who simply squared it back towards Suarez for the tap in to make it 4-1 at the break.

But, before the dust had settled on the shock opener to the game, Barcelona were soon level when Lionel Messi provided the flawless assist for Luis Suarez to score.

Barcelona, who are now 10 points clear at the top of the league, face Las Palmas next on March 1.

It was the first time Barcelona has started with Messi, Suarez, Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele on the pitch as they demonstrated just how devastating they can be in attack.
