In a shocking incident, a 27-year old Adivasi was allegedly hacked to death by a mob who say that he had stolen eatables and food packets. The Adivasis, who had blocked the ambulance carrying Madhu's body at Mukkali as it arrived there after postmortem at the Medical College Hospital in Thrissur, withdrew from it only after they were convinced that all the accused had been arrested.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident and said that he has instructed the State Police Chief to take strict action against the culprits. He was attacked by the mob in the forest near Palakkad on Thursday evening for alleged theft.

Madhu was tied up and assaulted for hours in the forests near Palakkad over alleged shop-lifting. Quoting Madhu's autopsy report, Inspector General of Police M R Ajithkumar said, "The reason for the death is injury to the head".

Agali police has registered a case and some persons have been taken into custody, they said. The perpetrators have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal code and the Forest Act, including murder and illegal confinement, the police officer said.

Attappady is one of the most backward tribal settlements in the state.

The State government has chose to provide an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh to the family of Madhu.

His mother and sister told television channels that a group of almost 10-15 persons went to the forest and thrashed him.

They also alleged that some forest officials had allowed the local people to go to the area and attack the tribal. "CM has given directions to the Chief Secretary to disburse the amount forthwith". "Though forest jeep was there they refused to take him in the vehicle", she said, adding when he asked for water they refused it. The Opposition too observed " Hartal" at Mannarcaud taluk, under which Attappadi falls.

Tribal activists from across Kerala staged a protest this morning, blocking traffic at Attappady.
