Updating New York Giants OC search after Stefanski report

Stefanski was considered a likely candidate for the job because of his links to Pat Shurmur, the Giants' new head coach who was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota for the past two seasons, as well as the Vikings' decision to hire Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their offensive coordinator this week.

Stefanski joined the Vikings in 2006 after Brad Childress was hired as coach.

They might have been ready, but the Vikings weren't about the let that happen.

DeFilippo could have waited to see if Eagles offensive Frank Reich becomes the head coach of the Colts, which made have led to his promotion with the Super Bowl champions.

It obviously wasn't Shurmur's best coaching job, but it also wasn't anything that should cause trepidation regarding his ability to do a good job in NY. The Giants now remain without an offensive coordinator.

Shurmur said on January 18 at the Vikings' Winter Park facility, when the Daily News traveled north to speak with the Giants' next head coach, that Stefanski has been "very patient with his career". I think he's always aspired to coach the quarterback, did an excellent job this year. Well, Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley is a hot name at the moment, and he and Shurmur overlapped when Staley was a Philly running back and Shurmur was coaching tight ends, offensive line and eventually quarterbacks for Andy Reid. In those three games, including a 38-7 victory over the Vikings in the NFC championship game, Foles threw for 971 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception for a 115.7 passer rating. If the Eagles lose Reich, they may keep Staley and promote him to become their own offensive coordinator.

One game isn't almost enough to dash the hopes that Shurmur could breathe life into a Giant team that shockingly underachieved.

Ryan spent nines seasons with the Giants, serving as a wide receivers and quarterbacks coach. His tenure included the grooming of Russell Wilson, the Super Bowl XLVIII victory over the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium and the Super Bowl XLIX loss to the Patriots that featured one of the worst play calls in National Football League history, making Malcolm Butler's game-sealing interception at the goal line possible.

As the Giants' head coach, Shurmur will be the offensive and quarterback authority.
