"There should be no doubt that Russia perceives that its past efforts as successful and views the 2018 USA midterm elections as a potential target for Russian influence operations", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee during a hearing on the top national security threats to the U.S.

U.S. National Intelligence Director Dan Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday during its annual worldwide threats hearing that North Korea's weapons of mass destruction will pose a significant danger to the U.S. and its allies in the near future.

Asked about Pyongyang's nuclear program, Coats said "this is an existential threat, potentially to the United States, but also to North Korea".

The report predicted Russian intelligence agencies will disseminate more false information over Russian state-controlled media and through fake online personas to spread anti-American views and exacerbate social and political divides in the United States.

The commander-in-chief remains unconvinced that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election - putting him at odds with the entire US intelligence community, according to a report.

Other senators asked Coats, Pompeo, Wray and their counterparts to restate their support for the 2017 assessment that concluded Russian Federation had attacked the previous year's election.

Among those who spoke at the hearing were Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, FBI Director Christopher Wray and National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers.

Government countermeasures likely include going public with concerns that Russian hackers will seek to influence the 2018 elections, said John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis with the cyber security firm FireEye Inc.

Despite Trump's confusion, the former issue is actively being investigated by special prosecutor Robert Mueller and multiple congressional committees, while the latter has been affirmed and put to bed by the entire USA intelligence apparatus.

China is carrying out a well-orchestrated strategy to replace United States as a global power, top American lawmakers and spymaster said.

Officials also basically guaranteed the Russians are going to continue meddling in USA elections this year.

And after the Congress took real action against Russian Federation by slapping it with major sanctions in response to the interference, Trump completely undermined their work by declining to enforce the sanctions.

Executives from social media companies such as Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc have testified in Congress about Russia's purported disinformation drive aimed at U.S. voters.

Director of National Intelligence ' remarks came days after a group of Pakistan-based terrorists struck the Sunjuwan Military Camp in Jammu, killing seven people including six soldiers. "From U.S. businesses, to the federal government, to state and local governments, the United States is threatened by cyber attacks every day".

Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said he wanted the report to appear before this year's primaries and to convene another open hearing focusing on the tasks involved with safeguarding elections.

"This threat did not begin in 2016, and it certainly didn't end with the election".
