"Synaptics' Clear ID fingerprint sensors are faster, more convenient, and more secure than alternative biometrics, and this optical technology represents a major innovation shift and opportunity for the smartphone market", Barber added.
The company now has big automotive aspirations, but more importantly, it managed to be the first company to show us actually working under-display fingerprint sensor.
As for the smartphone, Vivo has said that the smartphone is ready for production.
Made in collaboration with Synaptics, the fingerprint sensor will only be "visible" when it is needed; a fingerprint icon will be shown on the display whenever the sensor is active.

Considering the timeline set out by vivo, there's a good chance the Chinese company will officially unveil the unannounced smartphone next month at MWC 2018. It has its limitations, where it only work with the phones that use OLED displays as the sensor looks through the spaces between subpixels from under the panel.
BGR quotes a release from TrendForce saying that "Fingerprint sensors will still be the first choice for most Android phones in 2018, since other biometric authentication methods available for Android phone makers can not completely replace fingerprint identification yet".
Vivo had announced in December past year that it would be the first company to launch a phone with in-display fingerprint sensor. So far, manufacturers have moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of their full-screen smartphones, a solution that hasn't been too popular with people. However, it also means device makers have to get creative with the fingerprint sensor.
Synaptics has said that the sensor takes just 0.7 seconds to recognize and authenticate the fingerprint. Like other new smartphone features, the fingerprint reader will first be offered in premium smartphones, in part because the scanner only works with OLED displays, at least for now. Early reports claim this sensor is accurate and fast enough, but it can't match the speed and accuracy of the best dedicated fingerprint sensors. Once the fingerprint is registered, unlocking the phone works just fine, like any other physical fingerprint sensors.
