The Constitution prohibits the government from punishing or retaliating against people for expressing their views, and the fact that a schoolteacher was arrested at a public meeting of the school board is especially troubling.

He walked her out of the building in handcuffs as teachers and parents followed after her.

During a school board meeting on Monday, Deyshia Hargrave brought up the issue of teacher salary and a raise that was included in a new contract for the superintendent, according members of the Vermilion Parish School Board. A teacher's union lawyer is investigating, and while teachers were at work Tuesday, a School Board member says there is talk of a strike.

According to the arrest report, Rene Rost Middle School teacher Deyshia Hargrave was booked on one count of resisting and officer and one count of remaining on premises after forbidden. Hargrave was called upon a second time for comment.

He also added that the marshal who arrested Hargrave is a school officer employed by the school board who was "not acting in any official capacity on behalf of the city of Abbeville".

"I am not, you just pushed me to the floor", Hargrave responds.

She is now out on bond. Superintendent Jerome Puyau, who is the beneficiary of the $38,000 raise, told local reporters that the school board was not pressing charges against Hargrave.

"What happened here tonight; the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish, I have never seen a man removed from this room".

With the board seemingly uninterested in answering the educator's concerns, an Abbeville city marshal then charged into view, confronted the woman, and demanded she leave the crowded meeting.

After the board approved the raise, Hargrave was again recognized by the board and voiced her frustrations.

Hargrave bonded out of jail, The Associated Press reported.
