Julian Assange's Twitter account goes quiet

The disappearance of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's Twitter account has created confusion among his fans and followers, the media reported.

Then at 1.5am (AEDT), he popped up again with a tweet showing a cartoon of Santa making a Wikileaks "good or bad" list.

Assange followed up with a promotional tweet, and a cute corgi, linking it to WikiLeak's donation page.

His last tweet was posted on December 22 and contained the quote from Assange: "A knowledgeable public, is an empowered public, is a free public".

It's also not even certain if Assange is aware his social media profile went down, at least for public view, as he made several posts on the platform in stride the next morning.

We've reached out to Twitter (via email) and Wikileaks (via Twitter DM) for additional information and will update if we hear back.

Another account claiming to be Assange's alternate handle said Twitter deleted the official account ahead of a blockbuster story he's preparing to break.

"The inadvertent tweet was briefly posted for a few second before it was quickly deleted by the same authorized user". There was no confirmation that Assange was authoring that alternative account - and that account has now been suspended by Twitter.

Did they raid him?

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is seen on the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, Britain, May 19, 2017.

The official Wikileaks Twitter account, which in the past has appeared to be directly controlled by Assange, is still up and running.
