Mr Gandhi, who assumed charge as Congress president on Saturday, campaigned for nearly two months in Gujarat and gave the BJP its toughest fight in Mr Modi's home state.

Both Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress have campaigned hard in the high-stakes elections with both sides fielding their top leaders for campaigning.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who is contesting against Congress' Jivabhai Patel from Mehsana constituency, expressed confidence of winning after casting his vote for the second-phase of Gujarat Assembly elections.

If the Congress wins, it will be a sort of people's endorsement of Mr Gandhi's leadership of the party, and it will be great set back for the BJP and for the prime Minister individually ahead of the 2109 Lok Sabha elections.

In the first phase of elections, the polling was conducted on 89 seats in the areas falling under Saurashtra and South Gujarat.
