Quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed on Monday after an MRI.

Carson Wentz #11 of the Philadelphia Eagles is escorted off the field at the end of the third quarter during the game against the Los Angeles Rams at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on December 10, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. Pederson said Monday that the team believes the injury occurred before contact.

Wentz was having an MVP-caliber season, as he had completed 265 of 440 passes for 3296 yards, 33 TD, 7 INT, and a passer rating of 101.9, leading the Eagles to an 11-2 record.

Nick Foles takes over as the starting quarterback after subbing in for Wentz on Sunday.

"This has been a resilient football team all season long", Pederson said.

It was a score that held for almost two quarters, as both teams struggled to move the ball as the snowfall continued. They have two games against the Dolphins and a trip to New England to play the Patriots left on their schedule.

Foles has plenty of experience in his career, making 36 starts during two stops with the Eagles as well as stints with the then-St. Dr. James Andrews, in comments to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, said the timetable for return should be 9-12 months, and too many players want to rush that timetable. You know, yeah, he is the quarterback of our football team, and each one of these guys that I mentioned is tough to replace.

"It's your job to go in there and just try to find completions and play fast because it had been awhile since I played", Foles said.

"I'm absolutely ready", Foles said after the game.

Wentz continued for another four plays after getting hurt, finding Alshon Jeffery for a two-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal before leaving the field. "That's part of the reason why we brought him up (off the practice squad) earlier in the year". "I'm sure if you look at my Twitter, you'll still see Eagles fans wanting me to come back. If there's ever an opportunity for me as a head football coach to rally the troops, now might be the time".

Foles, a more than capable backup, has proven he can win in spot relief, but he's nowhere near Wentz's level. They will be a heavy favorite even without Wentz.
