Embattled Rep. John Conyers to step down Tuesday

U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) announced his retirement Tuesday, bringing to an end a more than five-decade run in the House.

The Democratic lawmaker has been hospitalized for stress-related health reasons earlier this week after he felt dizzy and light-headed at his Detroit home.

In the latest turn in the case, another accuser, Elisa Grubbs, says Conyers slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church.

Conyers" attorney Arnold Reed told the Detroit Free Press the new allegations from Grubbs are "another instance of tomfoolery from the mouth of Harvey Weinstein's attorney'. Conyers, who said only that he was retiring Tuesday, but not resigning, denied any wrongdoing in the interview and endorsed his son to replace him in the House.

Conyers stepped down as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee after it was revealed he had settled a wrongful dismissal suit with one former staffer after she accused him of firing her for resisting his sexual advances.

In the affidavit, Grubbs said Brown told her, "That SOB just wanted me to have sex with him".

Conyers, 88, is already facing a House Ethics Committee inquiry.

'The allegations against congressman Conyers as we have learned more since Sunday are serious, disappointing and very credible, ' said Pelosi, a California representative who notably did not call for Conyers to go during a Sunday appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press'.

As allegations of sexual misconduct continue to swirl around him, several of Conyers' congressional colleagues encouraged him to resign.

Buzzfeed News reported on November 20 that Conyers had settled a complaint in 2015 from a woman who alleged she was sacked from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances. We don't condone sexual harassment on any level, ' he said.

Rep. John Conyers' attorney is expected to make an announcement later this morning.

Wounded by the mounting accusations, and well aware of the potential implications for Democrats' efforts to win congressional seats in next year's mid-term elections, the party's congressional leadership last week called for Conyers to resign.

"Oh, absolutely not", Conyers said.

"Whatever (the allegations) are, they are not accurate", he said. The New York Timesis reporting Rep. Conyers will also announce his great-nephew and current MI senator Ian Conyers will run for his seat at the end of his term.

Conyers has denied the allegations of sexual misconduct.

Following these accusations, House minority leader Nanci Pelosi eventually asked Conyers to step down, as did Rep. James E. Clyburn.

Conyers was first elected to the House in 1964.

Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.
