'Violent psychopath' who fled Hawaii mental hospital captured in California

Himelblau said there is nearly no chance that Hawaii won't request extradition, given Saito's violent history.

Hawaii's Gov. David Ige said the public and authorities should have been made aware of the incident sooner, and said the state has started a review of the hospital's practices.

Extradition procedures to return the suspect to Hawaii are expected to take about two weeks, said Robert Himelblau, a spokesman for the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office.

Honolulu Police say Saito escaped from the hospital around 9am Sunday.

Altman said Saito can be personable and has good social skills.

In 1981, authorities committed Saito to the hospital after the gruesome death of 29-year-old Sandra Yamashiro, who prosecutors said Saito shot and stabbed numerous times before leaving her body at Ala Moana Center in Honolulu.

The department posted a photograph on social media showing Saito surrounded by three deputies at a gas station. Police said he boarded a plane to Maui.

The victim was shot and repeatedly stabbed before her body was found in her vehicle at a mall.

According to NBC Bay Area News, Saito escaped Hawaii State Hospital on Sunday, November 12th.

Dr. Virginia Pressler, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, said an internal inquiry indicated that workers inadvertently or intentionally neglected to supervise Randall Saito and notify their supervisors.

Saito has been charged with felony escape, and the attorney general said the breakout was not planned by someone suffering from a "mental defect".

Randall Saito, who was acquitted of murder in 1981 after pleading insanity, escaped Hawaii State Hospital at 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
