By contrast, Virginia ranked among the top the five states this fall.

The Leapfrog Group has released its fall hospital safety grades, and more than a third earned only a middling score on the report. "Our physicians, nurses and staff are completely devoted to consistently preventing harm to our members and patients".

Coastal Carolina Hospital scored a "C" from spring 2014 through spring 2016, but jumped up to an "A" on the last three reports.

There were no reported F grades in the entire state.

Eighteen of 39 hospitals graded in the semiannual Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades report received the highest possible mark, including nine that are located in the Denver area. "This is a significant achievement and we're tremendously proud of our medical providers and staff". Its hospital safety grades, released every April and October since 2012, are aimed at encouraging patients to pay attention to safety when they choose hospitals.

The assessments are based on 30 performance measures that incorporate everything from medical errors and accidents to staffing levels and infection control.

The biannual 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades report shows the safety grades of hospitals in five states - Oregon, Rhode Island, Hawaii, Wisconsin and Idaho - have improved significantly since Leapfrog first issued grades in 2012.

In Savannah, Memorial University Medical Center, Candler Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital all received a grade of "C".
